Walnut
This project was requested by an architect friend who worked at the architectural/engineering firm where I worked. She and her husband lived on an acreage near Elmwood, NE, where they had to cut down an old walnut tree on their property. They asked me if I would design and fabricate a trestle table and benches for their three sons. They took the log to a nearby sawmill and had it cut to my dimensional suggestions. The table and benches can be disassembled into flat pieces, and they can be assembled and secured using a series of walnut wedges. After the original benches were made they asked if I would make two chairs from the same stock of walnut. The photographs below show the original raw wood prior to fabrication and some progress shots.
