Expandable Dining Room Table

Maple with Madrone

This table was requested by my architect daughter and her new husband who grew up in Oregon. She requested a maple top using 8/4 strips of quarter sawn maple with contrasting wood accent strips. I suggested we use madrone, a reddish colored wood native to Oregon, for the accent strips and the base. The madrone lumber actually came from a mill located in my son-in-law’s home town. The table incorporates storage of the expansion leaves inside the table and uses geared expansion supports to allow for expansion of the table top by pulling on one end only.
